Pelvic Floor Implications of the Running Athlete

Pelvic Floor Implications of the Running Athlete is an evidence-based, two-day continuing education course designed for physical therapists and rehabilitation professionals seeking to better understand the role of the pelvic floor in running performance and injury. This course integrates pelvic anatomy, running biomechanics, and clinical reasoning to provide practical strategies for evaluating and treating runners with pelvic floor–related dysfunction. Through lectures, hands-on labs, and video gait analysis, participants will learn to assess movement patterns, identify impairments, and design targeted interventions. Special considerations for pregnant and postpartum runners are included to support safe and effective care across the lifespan.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe pelvic floor anatomy and explain its functional relationship to running biomechanics and load transfer.

  2. Perform a comprehensive evaluation of the running athlete, including screening for pelvic floor–related impairments.

  3. Identify common running-related injuries and impairments associated with pelvic floor dysfunction and differentiate these from other musculoskeletal contributors.

  4. Apply practical assessment techniques to evaluate stability, neuromuscular control, and movement patterns in runners.

  5. Design and progress evidence-informed therapeutic exercise programs for runners with pelvic floor dysfunction, integrating foot and pelvic floor mechanics.

  6. Conduct systematic running gait examinations and utilize video gait analysis to assess and interpret running mechanics in both male and female runners.

  7. Synthesize evaluation findings, gait analysis, and exercise progression into cohesive, patient-centered plans of care.

  8. Apply appropriate management strategies for special populations, including pregnant and postpartum runners.

This course is approved for 13.25 contact hours of CE credit in the state of CA. If you are attending from out of state CElutions Education will help you submit for approve in your state.
